March 19th. Flash Flood Watch active. River rising. KFD responded.

19 people stranded on the Uluwehi Trail. 14 of them children. A swollen, fast-moving river between them and safety.

Kapa’a Fire Station, Rescue 3, the Battalion Chief, and KFD’s Highwater vehicle were on scene and working. No waiting for the water to drop. No waiting for easier conditions. Crews got in that river, used the kayaks to move all 19 people across, and got them out to Kamokila Village one by one.

That is swift water rescue in real time. The current does not care. The flood does not pause. And these firefighters put their bodies between that danger and 19 people who did not know how bad it was about to get.

Every single person made it out. Not a single injury.

Three hours of dangerous, physical, high-stakes work in flood conditions. That is what your Hawaii Fire Fighters showed up and did that day, and continue to do everyday.

So much more than “fight fire.”
All hazards. All the time.

HFFA spent the day on Kauaʻi today.
We stopped in to first meet with Fire Chief Gibson and discuss some of KFD’s ongoing projects. KFD is celebrating a couple big wins with AFG and SAFER grant funding @iaffofficial that will fund 3 new rescue positions and much needed apparatus.

Mayor Derek Kawakami’s office was our next stop. Thank you mayor for sitting down with us and engaging in meaningful dialogue. #pilina

We then headed over to Līhuʻe ARFF and then over to KFD engine 3 and rescue 3. Mahalo gang for the hospitality and talk story. 👊🏽

Mt. Kaʻala, Waiʻanae- Tuesday afternoon, 17 firefighters across 6 units dropped everything and went to work. Air 1 in the sky, ground crews pushing up the mountain from two sides, coordinating across shifting GPS locations on rough terrain.

Hours later, one hiker home safe.

This is what these men and women do every single day. Fires, rescues, medical calls, whatever comes in. No hesitation. No shortcuts. Just Hawaii’s firefighters doing what they were trained to do.

We see you, HFD. The islands are better because of you.

🤙🔥
