Aloha HFFA Ohana,

Bobby Kaye Ferguson – wife of Jim Ferguson, former 10th District* Vice President of the International Association of Fire Fighters and a longtime friend of HFFA – has reached out to us to ask for our help in supporting her father, Allie Reynolds, to be inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame for the Class of 2022. He is one of nine candidates the Early Baseball Era Committee will consider for induction.
.
Reynolds, an American Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, won 182 games in his 13-year big league career with the Cleveland Indians (1942-1946) and New York Yankees (1947-1954), with 6 All-Star team selections.
.
Nicknamed “Superchief” because of his Muscogee** heritage, Reynolds led both of his teams to 6 World Series titles, going 7-2 with a 2.79 ERA and finished in the Top 3 of the American League’s Most Valuable Player Award voting. In 1951, he won the S. Rae Hickok Professional Athlete of the Year award, also known as the Hickok Belt, as the top American professional athlete of the year.

Reynolds attended Capitol Hill High School and the Oklahoma Agricultural & Mechanical College (A&M) where he was a multi-sport athlete. He was discovered by Henry Iba (baseball coach of the A&M baseball team) and after excelling at baseball and American football, Reynolds turned to professional baseball.

ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, #HonoluluFF extricated 2 individuals from a car following a multi-vehicle collision near the intersection of Middle Street and King Street around 10:50 AM.
.
The crash involved a pickup truck, large cement truck and a white 4-door sedan. Occupants of both trucks were able to exit their vehicles safety but 2 people were trapped in the sedan -- Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the passengers from their damaged vehicle.

ANAHOLA, KAUAI: Yesterday, #KauaiFF responded to f

ANAHOLA, KAUAI: Yesterday, #KauaiFF responded to flare-ups caused by 40-acre brush fire that began shortly before 5 PM on Tuesday on the makai side of Kuhio Highway near mile marker 12.
.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and found multiple sections of a 40-acre area on fire, battling the blazes to control and maintain them as well as monitoring for hotspots and embers that were jumping over fire breaks.
.
#KauaiFF remained at the scene to watch for more hotspots on Wednesday and cleared out at around 2:40 PM. There were no injuries and no structures were threated. It is currently unknown what caused the accident.

❗❗PSA ❗❗ Since the reopening of the state, there has been an large increase of individuals – both residents and visitors – who require rescuing by fire personnel when hiking on Hawaii’s trails.

Do your due diligence –
Prior to hiking, learn about the trail you intend to hike so that you know the route, where to start and the degree of difficulty. WHEN YOU GET TO THE TRAIL’S ENTRANCE, READ AND FOLLOW SIGNAGE. Be aware of restricted or closed trails.
.
Assess your Capabilities –
Compare your level of fitness, ability, and experience with the trail description. BE PRACTICAL AND REALISTIC. There are a wide variety of trails in Hawaii, so pick one that suits your level.
.
Be prepared –
Bring bottled water, a back-up battery pack if you intend to hike longer than your phone battery capability, and wear appropriate clothing. ALWAYS NOTIFY SOMEONE OF YOUR HIKING ITINERARY.

(ON MONDAY, #HonoluluFF rescued a dehydrated hiker who experienced severe cramping and could not move after 5 hours of hiking on the Kaau Crater Trail. RESCUE personnel had to airlift the male who was part of a hiking group of 9 to a secured landing zone before transferring his care and treatment to an awaiting EMS unit.)

WAIMEA: On October 21, #KauaiFF welcomed a new fire truck Waimea Fire Station to help with the unique environment of the area.
.
Aletha Kaohi officiated the christening and was joined by KFD Fire Chief Steven Goble, other representatives from KFD (including the shift crews at Waimea Fire Station), Office of the Mayor, Kauai County Council, Friends of Kauai Fire Service and other dignitaries including a representative from U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele.

The cost of the new truck was $654,291 replacing the last truck following its service life of 15 years. The KFD Apparatus Committee and firefighters Nohili Vierra, Sean Kitamura, Corey Sakai and Dan Hirata have all been a part of the overall project since 2019.

Pink and blue shirts with the MPD and MFD can be purchased via the Pacific Cancer Foundation, with each department trying to tell the most to benefit the Foundation which provides free support services for cancer patients, survivors and their families. www.pacificcancerfoundation.org

Patient navigations, nutritional counseling, support groups, workshops and wellness class are provided at the Pacific Cancer Foundation's office at Maui Memorial Medical Center, the Pacific Cancer Institute and the Cameron Center.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news that Brother Lane Keoki Lindsey passed away today. Please pray for his Ohana and send them strength to uplift them up through this difficult time. He was 49 years old and a father of 3 sons. He had 20 years of service.

Two weeks ago, our brother, #HICountyFF Keoki Lind

Two weeks ago, our brother, #HICountyFF Keoki Lindsey, was diagnosed with COVID-19 and, initially, had been fighting for his life on the Big Island at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Last Thursday (Aug. 26) night, the doctor was skeptical that he would make it through the night and told the Lindsey ‘Ohana to gather to wait for a phone call. The doctor told the Lindsey family to for Brother Keoki because that was all they can do … The phone call never came that night.
.
When the Lindsey ‘Ohana met with the doctor again on Friday (Aug. 27) morning, they were informed by the doctor that he had tried everything in the past week to get Brother Keoki to Oahu to receive the care that is unavailable at North Hawaii Community Hospital. About 6 hours later, Brother Keoki was approved for transport and allocated a bed, room and ventilator, Hemo Dialysis machine, ECMO machine and will get everything he needs.
.
Brother Keoki is currently at The Queens Hospital battling one of the worst cases of COVID-19 that the doctors have ever seen.
.
But Brother Keoki is a fighter.
.
He is a front line worker, essential service worker, a husband, a father of 3 … and a firefighter of more than 20 years of service who comes from a legacy of Hawaii firefighters. His brother is a retired Hawaii County firefighter and his father and uncle were two of the founding members of the Hawaii Fire Fighters Association, serving in both the Honolulu and Hawaii County Fire Departments for over 44 years.

We are asking you to please pray and send positive vibes to Brother Keoki as he continues his battle with COVID-19.

On MONDAY AUGUST 23, our IAFF General Secretary/Treasurer Frank Lima stopped by Pawaa Fire Station 2, 3rd Watch for an impromptu visit during his visit to Hawaii to briefly assist his daughter who is a UH-Manoa student.
.
Fortunately, all companies - Engine, Ladder and RESCUE 1 - were in quarters.
.
Pawaa is located in the heart of Honolulu, surrounded by densely populated condominiums and apartment complexes. It’s also the station closest to Hawaii’s largest shopping mall at Ala Moana Center, the coastline of Ala Moana Beach and on the edge of Waikiki. It’s easy to imagine the call volume for this station which averages approximately 260 per month.
.
The Pawaa station is also home to Rescue 1 which responds to the entire southern half of Oahu -- from Kaena on the western end to Hawaii Kai in the east -- and all points in between from Mauka (mountain) to Makai (ocean).
.

WAILUA FALLS (KAUAI): Last Friday (July 23), #KauaiFF rescued a 67-year-old California visitor who slipped approximately 25-feet while attempting to hike from the lookout area down to the pool below.
.
The call came in at 10:20 AM, with firefighters arriving at 10:35 AM. They made contact with the hiker's family and the hiker who appeared to suffer multiple head injuries.
.
Due to the rescue and the terrain complexity, first responders utilized a multipurpose device hauling system to secure and extract the hiker by noon where he was then treated by AMR personnel and later transported to Wilcox Medical Center.
.
Kauai Police closed off a portion of Ma'alo Road for about (2) hours while firefighters and RESCUE specialists rescued the visitor -- Fire crews from Lihu'e and Kapa'a fire stations and a battalion chief responded.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: On Saturday, July 10, 2021, #HICountyFF held their annual fishing tournament, renamed last year as the Annual Buta Memorial Fishing Tournament in honor of Brother Eric “Buta” Hayashi, a #HICountyFF who passed away while on duty in August 2020 and who was the founder of the tournament now in its 30th year.

Over 40 teams comprised of retired and active-duty firefighters entered the tournament this year and the results were as follows:

* Biggest Ahi - 173 lbs, Team KEY TO THE CITY
* Biggest Ono - 88 lbs, Team MIKIOI
* Biggest Mahi - 31 lbs, Team SALTY CREW

#MauiFF Captain Vernon Patao, who competed in the

#MauiFF Captain Vernon Patao, who competed in the 1992 Barcelona and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games, follows in the footsteps of his mentor Dr. Masayoshi Yogi via his company, HI Performance Athletics, where he helps to train the Maui community and young athletes.
.
It was in Dr. Yogi's garage in Kahului where Patao trained and eventually developed into a U.S. Olympic weightlifter. Patao won a junior national title and (3) at the senior level and is a former American record holder in the snatch; was a member of senior & junior national teams and a coach at the 2016 Olympic trials; holds a USAW Advanced Sports Performance Coach Level 2 license and has coached at the international level for USA Weightlifting.
.
He recently took a team of Maui athletes to the national championships in Detroit where all (7) recorded a top-10 finish. Patao also had his Maui team meet with 2020 Olympians who were using the national meet as a warmup for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, some of whom he traveled with to some of the junior meets.
.
On the trips, Patao makes sure the journey was about much more than just the competition but also to enjoy the culture of the area, to help contribute to making his teams be successful outside of the gym, off the court and outside of the classroom.

When he retires as a #MauiFF, Patao plans to start a kiruna program

TODAY, #MauiFF battled a fire that set ablaze (2)

TODAY, #MauiFF battled a fire that set ablaze (2) Young Brothers shipping containers at the Port of Kahului.

According to Young Brothers, the containers were filled with scrap metal and no hazardous materials were released.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
